NEW YORK (AP) -Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl never raised his voice, even though he's known for his combustible sideline demeanor. He never ducked a question or shunted blame toward someone else, instead accepting full responsibility for violating NCAA rules and misleading investigators.

He called it an exercise in humility - and humiliation.

"I'm hoping the worst is over, but I can't be confident about anything,'' Pearl said Tuesday in an interview before the NIT Season Tip-Off. "I let a lot of people down. I've always set a very high standard for myself and I didn't live up to it.''

he sets high standards for others and low standards for himself where he's able to do whatever he wants

And people are so shocked when all these athletes in both football and basketball were getting arrested last season. Trickle-down effect. I'm embarrassed that I was once a HUGE fan of this program. Love Pat Summit and love the move they made to get Derrick Dooley but Fulmer- STRIKE ONE, Kiffin- STRIKE TWO, Facing the VCU Rams- STRIKE THREE.

There was no tar nor feathers, but Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl was grilled at the NIT Season Tip-Off press luncheon.

Asked later by a UT staff member where he ate on Tuesday, Pearl replied, "At the media luncheon - they had me for lunch.''

No. 24 Tennessee (3-0) has not faced a team during the Pearl Era that has pressed for the majority of a 40-minute game. VCU has made pressure defense a large part of its identity this season.

"We'll need Melvin (Goins) against VCU to be at our best.''

Goins, a senior point guard, returned to practice on Sunday after being sidelined since last Tuesday with a deep side contusion.

"I can't remember the last time I've been pressed; probably high school,'' said Goins, who started his career at Ball State before transferring to Mt. San Jacinto (Calif.) junior college and UT. "Most of handling the press is just reaction, but you rely on things you've been working on in practice and just stay strong with the ball.

"We like to play fast, so if that's what they want ...''
