VCU Athletics website has add for Walk-on try outs for MBB October 19th. Wasn't there a guard from NoVA who enrolled - don't recall the name. Anyone have any knowledge about this student or any other tall dudes around campus (prefer 6'8" or bigger) who might be trying out?

Why so late?

Wouldn't you want any potential guys that make the team have weeks of conditioning and practice under their belt?

Unless of course, this isn't allowed.

pretty sure that kid's name is marcus freeman from park view.
guard who can shoot the lights out.

haven't heard much else about him after he said he was going to get an opportunity to walk on.

anyway we can get Rambo Rowdy to try out as our elite 3pt shooter?

Are you trying out for towel boy? or has stalking-the-opposing-cheerleaders become an official position?!

He has been invited to try out for a walk on position. I don't think this has changed. We'll see if he makes the team. He is currently enrolled in and taking classes right now at VCU.

from digitalsports.com

"Marcus Freeman will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University where he will major in Business Administration. VCU is Division I in the Colonial Athletic Association. He leaves Park View as the schools all-time leader in both career and single made three pointers. He has accepted an invitation from the basketball program to try-out for a walk-on position."

I wish him well....If he's got game, I'm sure Shaka will make him part of the family

feeling lazy today, so not prone to look it up in the rules like I would normally...

I know there's a limit on "counters" ...that is, financial-aid receiving team members... but is there a limit on total number of team members that would limit walk-ons?

if you had a bunch of pretty decent walk-ons, if nothing else, they could be havoc-wrecking press cannon fodder who could absorb fouls that would otherwise have to be committed by the more key players... sort of the sacrificial rams as it were

not sure that the whole platoon/wave style of subbing is really a good idea, but having the walk-on pawns would at least provide for the option

You'd have to be one heck of an athlete to walk on and get PT with the back court we have going. That said, it has happened before apparently.

Rumors - I repeat, rumors - float that 7-foot Gideon Mabeny might be coming to VCU, and might already be aboard. A native of The Sudan, Mabeny hails from the same Dinka tribe that produced Manute Bol.

Mabeny played at Fork Union Military in 2008 and signed with Division III power College of Wooster, Ohio. Then he tore his ACL in preseason workouts at Wooster. From that point on, I can't find any record of him. I don't see his name anywhere on the Wooster website.

Possibly Shaka Smart Ohio connections? The Wooster coach, Steve Moore, has been there a long time and might remember Shaka (Kenyon, Ohio) from some D-3 hoops wars, and also Mike Rhoades (Lebanon Valley, Pa.).

If Mabeny were transferring from a D-3 to a D-1, he might be a walk-on ... from what I can tell, he'd have four full years.

Don't hold me to any of this ... I just heard from a guy leaning against a wall ... ???
