We have 2 scholarships left according to Allen Payne

This makes me wonder if J Rod came back as a walk-on.

Hadn't heard anything about that. That is an intriguing possibility...I'll look into it.

Hadn't even considered that possibility, but it kind of makes sense -- as in, Smart agreed to take him back, but not as a scholarship player. Having Joey's scholarship open would certainly explain why the coaching staff felt free to accept commitments from Brandenburg and McCarter when they obviously need big men.

that would be an interesting possibility and would certainly free up another scholarship, but doesnt change the idea that i still think one of our scholarship players is going to leave based on the logjam in the back-court and no i am not suggesting we would then go after a 5th recruit as i would just save the schollie for next year or hope a big time recruit becomes available in the spring when everyone else is out of them.

not to go back too much, but doesnt this make the decision to basically just pass on Anthony Lee a little more curious as it wasnt really deciding between him and going after Bradley?

There is more to the story than us simply deciding between him and Bradley. He was not the type of player we recruit at VCU.

And what i was looking for was more than a general statement, but more why that is the case; what it was that makes him not a "type of player" we recruit. if it can be said, obviously.

Maybe he had some kind of attitude problem or something....who knows. I'm glad the staff atleast considers these kinds of things.

i agree that i am glad that the staff is looking at more than any amount of skill in building this program because the environment and work ethic of all of our players is just as important. not to mention if we show those things we will get plenty of talented recruits who want to come and make the most out of those we get.

When I asked I was just told that we dropped him after the visit. I assume something happened to turn off the coaching staff? I really know nothing more than that.

Lets not forget, this is a 17-18 year old. Wouldn't take his word as the gospel, but it definitely adds a new twist to this year's recruiting. If true I would love to know how this is possible. Maybe the Times-Dispatch will look into this...yeah, I know, I was just kidding. They only investigate important stuff like broken door incidents.

Talked today with VCU BB reporter for TD--he has been on vacation but was aware of Reco verbal and is back reviewing now. I know TD has had layoff's and reassignments so I doubt they have back-up's when short staffed.

Let's keep our eye's open for next day on this and perhaps number of scholarships. I must admit, I am scratching my head on the scholly issue...

We had a faculty applicant a while back who "double-dipped" (Seinfeld ref, for the memory impaired - "you dipped a chip, you took a bite...and then you dipped again!") a breadstick at La Mer in the Jefferson at a group dinner which hurt their chances - maybe Mr. Lee did something equally as ghastly in front of the coaching staff during his visit.

Exactly what does that mean ?? We DID recruit him. We brought him to campus for a visit. We saw him play at the nike peach jam in july in georgia. We recruited him HARD. He is a skilled big man with a lot of potential. He is academically qualified. Please clarify. Clearly you must know something that none of us do ?

I really don't. xjohnx might know. That's really all I heard. I also find it hard to believe we passed on a top 30 pf...I suspect it might just be spin from the AD. We have no reason to say no to a guy like Bradley. That said I feel better now with Reco in the fold. Hopefully we can get some of these other targets as well. My gut tells me Anthony probably just liked Temple better.

We said no to Bradley?!?!?!? #%&$!

Sorry DB - my post was to XJohn not to you...there is more to the Lee story than is posted here. There was NOTHING negative concerning the young man at all. I cannot share any more info. Please don't assume something was wrong or that the kid must "have had an attitude"...that is NOT the case at all here.
