We have a lot to be excited about...

I'm excited that db is so excited about the Reco McCarter verbal commitment! Did you see all of those Reco posts? I don't know what you're planning to do when we get a verbal from Michael Bradley but I can't wait to find out!

I don't even want to begin to think about it. I would be smiling for weeks. :)

the recruit from this year's class that excites me the most is theus because i do think he has the ability to step in and be a steady leader from us nearly from the beginning. not to mention the chance to watch his game grow over the years.

That's an interesting point. We didn't have the greatest attendance at basketball games considering we had a bonafide first rounder in Eric Maynor playing at the Stu. What happens if we lose a couple (which is very possible with the tougher early schedule)? Do we see a drop in support for the team? We have a strong and committed die-hard fan base, but they are relatively small. Will the casual fan still come out? Richmond is notoriously a bad sports town. Hopefully we won't get too much of a let-down from the students and general population if we get off to a rocky start. Without Skeen and having as many questions as we do, combined with the tough schedule, it could happen.

I am worried about getting off to a good start. We have a pretty difficult out-of-conference schedule and we have so many unknowns plus a lot of expectations from our fans. November and December are going to be pretty interesting and exciting months. In spite of these comments, I feel really good about team and our chances for a good start.

thats a good point district, but when can you think of a time when we had a legit chance to have a home game be on the ESPN family of networks a possible THREE times in the first half alone (OK, Nevada, and UR). That alone is going to drive attendance up and carry us into the new year and conference games. I know Deuce's concern is losing, but just imagine if we beat Oklahoma at home on espn or espn2....

Concerns:
Guards/forwards that can penetrate and score
rebounding as a team
floor leadership
road toughness
games before Christmas
1st game after Christmas
fouling

Will Shaka have the flexibility to move away from the "94 ft press" as the primary defensive scheme? Brad, Krill, TJ, Joey, Saintil, and what i've heard of Skeen would seem to be more effective defensively in a half court scheme. Also protects Larry from 1 on 1 situations. With Larry in the middle and Krill or Saintil or Skeen playing the 4 easy shots would be hard for opponents to find. Run off of rebounds, send one or both guards early.

Who will create on offense? Eric was one of the best ever.

Wow- I'm late to this party, and you cats have already hit on everything, I believe. Here's my 2 cents:

1- Shaka can definitely recruit! Can he floor-coach as well ?
2- Chemistry.
3- Chemistry.
4- Chemistry
5- The Point Guard position
6- Skeen getting in there and being ready to go - ASAP
7- Scoring distribution- which I believe can make up for Eric's loss
8- Larry staying out of bad foul trouble
9- Development of Saintil, Joey, Brad, & Rozzell
0- Is Gavin as good as advertised ?
1- The "defined roles," as discussed by another poster

If we get these things nailed down, I believe we could be lethal. But it's a lot that we need to happen.

I am not worried. Not at all.

Why am I not surprised. :)

I have a feeling you'll probably be proven right in your confidence when the season's all said and done.

Over the last 30 plus years there have been several years where I was worried. This is not one of them.

Concerns...I have 3 main ones
1) Rebounding...I can't remember the last time we had a player avg. double digits in rebounding. I would go so far as to say we've had average to poor rebounding team stats nearly every year since I've been following VCU (1992). Maybe Larry or Jamie will change that

2)Shaka the Coach...we've seen Shaka the Recruiter, Shaka the Press Conference Guy, Shaka the Preparer....but we haven't seen Shaka the Coach (at least not in a game that matters) Do I think he'll be more then pretty good right away? Yea, but until you see for certain, it's an area of concern

3)Team Chemistry...Lots of new faces, lots of new oppurtunity, and I'm sure a clean slate for all since Shaka showed up. Are players who had more then a fair amount of PT last year going to chafe at others getting oppurtunities? Will there be enough minutes for everyone? Is it going to be all for one or are we gonna have a player Douche it up (don't need to name names from the past, but you know what I mean)

that being said....I drink the kool aid....but I also don't have my head in the sand. 4th straight conference title is certainly a possibility....and you couldn't have said that as we wandered the desert after Grant left town :D

From talking to Skeen he is very confident about going to the NCAA tourney and winning this year. He is hitting the books hard and is a great guy. He is his own man! IMO Theus will be the PG by thwe end of the year do to his skills and size. Grayson will be a spark off the bench along with TJ and Saintil. Those guys are great role players and every great team has them. We have it all!!!!!!!!!!
