Welcome Terrence Hill Jr!!

Yeah, it's not like the playing field has ever been level. We've always had to carry the ball up hill vs the P5 or however many now. (Sorry for the football analogy). We have to find new ways to do it now.
The unfortunate thing is that the way mid-majors used to be able to compete with the big guys was that mid-majors typically kept their players for four years because those players (Bones Hyland being our exception) don't tend to leave early for the NBA. So, a senior-laden mid-major could be comparable to a blue blood full of freshmen and sophomores who are bound for the League. Yes, we can still put together a senior-laden team for VCU through the portal (and it seems we are this year) but many times those seniors have only played together for one year, and thus don't have the chemistry advantage we used to have. And, the diamond in the rough that mid-majors sometimes found never get to pay dividends for the mid-major because they leave for the blue bloods after one or two years.

So, yes, we've always had to carry the ball uphill, but the hill is steeper now.

I don’t have a subscription, did he sign?
Nik Streng of the Oregonian depicts Hill as one of the top boys basketball players in the state this winter. He led the Roughriders to a 26-3 record, a district title and a trip to the Class 6A state championship while averaging 21.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals.
VCU Athletics cannot comment until Hill’s signed NLI is received and validated.
But Hill’s announcement came with an image of him dribbling a ball at midcourt of the basketball development center, pointing at the camera while wearing gold sneakers, black socks and a No. 2 VCU jersey.

Hi, y'all... Ol' worn out ol' RPI/VCU guy... Been following the team forever... I go back to Ren Watson... When I came to RPI in 1965 the basketball coach asked "You play ball?"... He was trying to get enough bodies to practice... I said, "No" and that was it... Guy must have been desperate... I was 6'0" and weighed about 150 pounds...

But seriously... What the NCAA has done is not good for mid-majors... Maybe they could sue the NCAA for some kind of collective bargaining agreement where all the money that is being raised to attract could be pooled and split between all the D-1 schools so that kids would be paid the same no matter what college they go to??? Kinda like rookie salaries in the NFL...

I donno??? I do know that the way it is now is not good for college basketball...

Thoughts???

BTW, welcome to Richmond, Terrence... My son and his wife just moved in with me and my wife from Portland, Or... If ya' get lonely for Portland give me a holler...

I go back to Ren Watson too and maybe a little Jessie Dark but I wasn't anywhere near campus in '65!

The campus was much different then... Most of the classes were held in old houses that have since been torn down... The basketball team played in the Franklin Street Gym and free and even so only attracted a couple hundred people... Oh, and there were old houses all the way from today's theater on Harrison and Park all the way to Shefer St and then from Shefer toward Monroe Park a couple hundred feet all turned into classrooms...

Over the years the basketball teams got better and better but certainly had its share of character... Dana Kirk was a car salesman and wore loud clothes and white shoes like a golfer... Then we had "Buffalo" Carmack who, like Charles Barkley, was built like a fire hydrant... And Danny Kotack who had a wicker shot from the corner which he could only make if he was falling out of bounds just before releasing it... Oh, and then there was 6'10" Penny Elliot who couldn't dunk in an empty gym (LOL... Actually, he could... Just not when we needed a basket with the game on the line)...

I'm rambling... Sorry...

Ren Watson had the most effective shot blocking style, more often than not he ended up with the ball after the block.
He ended up as a security guard/officer at VCU after he graduated... At least, that's what I heard from one of my old classmates... I was one on the 200 or so kids who went to the games and loved Ren Watson's style of play... He made everything look effortless...

NIL is also going to cause many coaches to jump as soon as possible if a new school has a bigger pot of gold at the end of their rainbow.
More than they already do now? It’s not as if MM’s aren’t jumping to P5 for the money now?

Seriously, I can see NIL accelerating the jump any more so than the big money has as there have to be openings. The coaches have always been driven by the mon

I disagree. I dont think the hill is any steeper. The rules changed for everyone even the P5.

The P5 is just as susceptible to defections as the MM’s. Everyone has to regroup and reload every year.

We may not be able to keep a class together but neither will the P5. All we as solid MM’s have to do is figure our formula.

That formula wont be any more difficult than the past formula was given the previously system. Just different.

When we bemoan the change we act as if it only applies to us and not the P5.

For example, we will always have guys we can keep who are late bloomers (Fermin and Fats) who need another year to get the bag if they choose but they will perform at least one year. Remember Fats and Fermin each have been on campus 3 years. They most likely will have solid years next year and if they leave in year 4 well that’s that.

However, we will still be able to attract quality replacements such as Brandon from Michigan, Zeb, Bam, KK, Shulga, SB, Wheeler, Clark, and the new guy from UT all guys we might not have gotten in other eras.

The hill isnt any steeper as the entirety of college basketball has to adjust.

Nothing you say is incorrect except that the hill isn't steeper. The difference with the yearly reload for VCU is that VCU *used* to bring kids in and show them all the amazing facilities, and show them tapes of how great our crowds are, and tell them how cool Richmond is, and how VCU has a history of sending kids to the NBA. Occasionally we'd get one of those higher-ranked recruits. Now, a kid will come here and then go visit, for example, Michigan State, and MSU doesn't even have to try to convince them ... they just come up with more money than VCU can.

So, what we have here is that VCU has the same challenge they always had -- being a mid-major team and not a power conference team. And now you're adding to that the inability to compete with the cash that power teams can throw around. Not that I care that he's not here, but I firmly believe that five years ago, with all other things being equal, Jamarii Thomas is playing at VCU. Add to that, Max Shulga is playing at VCU and possibly Tobi Lawal. The money is the difference and it has made things more difficult. So, thus, a steeper hill.
