Welcome Terrence Hill Jr!!

My thinking about "NIL" is that the mid-majors will be the one's doing the "old school" recruiting... I.E. flying into remote areas and cities to see kids play and hopefully meet their coaches and family and do all the things they have always done and tailor and mentor kids wo will move up... Seems like the mid-majors are being taken advantage of by the NCAA and the BIG BOYS... They spend their money and for what??? One year??? Two??? Tell me where I'm wrong...

I mentioned the possibility of the mid-majors suing the NCAA... Unless someone can talk me down off the ledge, this seems like the only way this can work in the long run... If mid-majors have to recruit a new batch of freshmen every year it's going to cost them a lot more to fill their rosters... That means more money - and staff - over time... It's still a little early to see if that is actually happening but it seems like common sense??? No???

I donno???

Nothing you say is incorrect except that the hill isn't steeper. The difference with the yearly reload for VCU is that VCU *used* to bring kids in and show them all the amazing facilities, and show them tapes of how great our crowds are, and tell them how cool Richmond is, and how VCU has a history of sending kids to the NBA. Occasionally we'd get one of those higher-ranked recruits. Now, a kid will come here and then go visit, for example, Michigan State, and MSU doesn't even have to try to convince them ... they just come up with more money than VCU can.

So, what we have here is that VCU has the same challenge they always had -- being a mid-major team and not a power conference team. And now you're adding to that the inability to compete with the cash that power teams can throw around. Not that I care that he's not here, but I firmly believe that five years ago, with all other things being equal, Jamarii Thomas is playing at VCU. Add to that, Max Shulga is playing at VCU and possibly Tobi Lawal. The money is the difference and it has made things more difficult. So, thus, a steeper hill.
I watched the video of this player and seems like perfect fit for VCU and Odom's offense... I do know that players love to shoot and Odom loves shooting... I'm hoping that this kid likes to shoot and figures he's better off under Odom getting to shoot than moving up where he might not have those opportunities??? Whaddayathink???

I get it with Max but as coach said if Nova didn’t pay Max he was gone. Max is only with Nova because they paid more than he was guaranteed if he played anywhere but the NBA. Again, Odom stated Shulga was always gone. So he doesnt stay.

I agree that Tobi left because of money. However, guys have always left whether the money was under the table or above board. Guys like Tobi seeing greener grass again were going to leave.

As to the earlier point of Bones being an outlier, he wasn’t Larry left after 3 years.

My point is we over stated that power of the NIL money as the P5 have always outspent us be it over the table or under the table, The game really hasn’t changed. The only difference is guys will move around and that affects the P5 as well as the MM’s.

As to Jamari Thomas 5 years ago, maybe he isn’t here as we dont value him as much as the other guys who would “find” him money under the table that we would be unwilling to pay. At the end of the day, all things being equal if there is no money involved a kid has the option of playing int the SEC v. A10 they are typically going to chose SEC especially if the SEC teams tells them they have a shot at starting and the A10 team tells them they will be in the rotation.

All, I am saying is that the game has changed but not really the outcomes. Only time will tell you could be correct. However, let’s wait and see maybe at some point we all meet and have a beer to discuss.

Exactly. And it’s looking like we can’t compete with the bag paid to a P5 bench warmer. The hill is so steep it’s a cliff.

And yet, Will Wade and McNeese State are finding success in the transfer portal. Go figure!!!
That part is inexplicable. It's almost like Will Wade found another way to cheat. He wouldn't do that ... would he?

Odom and Theus both have made it abundantly clear that the threshold requirement for any recruit, before getting to their basketball skills, is their fit with the institution and the ethos of the program. Frank has said quite explicitly that he doesn't think those considerations are relevant. And he has signed talented players this program would not consider in 100 years.

Frank is who he is. We are who we are. May the latter of the two stay that way.

no. will wade just got a head start on the nil game. he is the perfect coach for the state of college basketball as it is. i implore all vcu fans to embrace will wade as a beakon of what mid and low majors can achieve in the portal.

He has embraced the year-to-year rebuilding of his team for sure, but it would shock exactly no one if we found out he discovered some new way to break the rules in order to be more successful in recruiting.

It is all about money.

It is all about money.
He surely hasn’t forgotten where the bags of cash are. It wasn’t coming from donors in his previous life, as far as the FBI knew.

Now it’s within the rules. He’s set until if/when Congress shuts down the current Wild West situation in the NCAA. If he jumps to the P5 before the rules change, he’ll likely build a legit title contender. No secret he can flat out coach and recruit with the right resources at his disposal.

Yet VCU has a young team with some real talented 1st and 2nd year players who just might like Odom's offense where they get to shoot a lot... Shooting more means more points and, who knows, as Odom gets the team to buy in only his 2nd year maybe these kids just like playing in a Odom's offense... As for the portal, I kinda think that a lot of teams may become addicted to it and get trigger happy and think they have to fill their rosters as fast as they can... I'm not really impressed with Richmond's team... Who knows... Like a good poker played, Odom may have his eye on some guys who he thinks will be the best fit for the team that aren't in panic mode to get signed??? We really don't know...
