I know this is old stuff, and I know that Capel is revered, but is it enough? I'm not sure he gets proper credit.

VCU has not won fewer than 18 games in any season since he became head coach. Only once did VCU not finish at least tied for second in the conference. And we're getting old: that was the 2002-03 season, folks.

He changed the perception of the program, booting bad kids and bringing in kids we can be proud of for more than points and assists.

Nick George, BA Walker, Eric Maynor, Mike Doles, JPR, Jamal Shuler, Troy Godwin, etc. The talent he brought here has been outstanding.

He has not turned his back on VCU.

All I'm saying is that I wonder sometimes what percentage of the credit given to Anthony Grant needs an asterisk that provides Jeff Capel his due.

Litos is back!

(and I agree with everything said above, but yall know I'm a biased Capel homer)

what do you suggest - a shrine of some sort?

How long did it take VCU to put JD in the Hall of Fame? Will they put Jeff in sooner? Does he deserve a spot? (this Capel homer says yes)

I have an idea...let give him a platform to showcase his skills...you know an established program with a proud history and great facilities and full support of an administration ( despite him having no experience) and help him land a BCS job that will make him and everybody he loves very rich while giving him an opportunity to win big.

Let’s give him that!!!

I personally will give him a standing ovation on a job well done we he comes back to the SC

As much as Capel did for VCU basketball, I don't thik a 3 - 5 year coaching stint should get you into the "hall of fame". That goes for Grant also. JD was here much longer and had more success. He also had a nationally ranked team, which neither Capel or Grant had.

We've had a good run over the last 5 - 7 years, but it has not been "hall of fame" material. Neither coach was here long enough to determine ownership of all of the credit.

Now if Coach Smart stays at VCU 8+ years, gets us to the sweet 16 and nationally ranked, he will be deserving of the VCU "Hall of Fame".

Now while I feel Capel deserves much gratitude for what he did here, people are right in that it wasn't enough for the Hall. Now that being said, this program would not be where it is right now without him. And he will always have my respect and admiration.

you mean "when",dont ya ;)

I think the relationship between the last two coaches and VCU have been mutually beneficial to say the least. I think the lion share of the gratitude should be reserved for VCU as opposed to the departing coaches based on their current situations.

No doubt JC3 deserves a ton of credit for helping to right the ship here. His statements since leaving reflect a lot of respect for VCU, the program and the city of Richmond. He has many admirers here and I include myself as one of them. Still to be lionized after a mere 3 year stint here is a bit much.

If it wasn't for Capel, I doubt VCU Basketball would be my religion. Without Capel we'd be like Towson....ugh......I love Coach Capel. He single handedly brought VCU back from the dead. I'll be the first to give him a standing applause at The Siegel Center next season. I'm very proud of his recruits in the '09 NBA Draft (Maynor & Griffin) That should tell you something about how special he is, and how retarded UVA is for not getting the guy. If I was UVA, I would have given him the sky. Capel will win a national championship one day. More than likely will replace coach K.

As always, you're killing me. But you're right. Yes, Capel was given a nice set of cards to open the hand. But he managed to succeed on all levels, in abundance, and some having nothing to do with what goes on during basketball games. He didn't win with bad kids. He reinvigorated the VCU basketball program--or at least he captained the ship during its reinvigoration. (I just made that word up.)

To be clear, I wasn't talking about Halls of Fame, shrines, or statues (wink, wink for a lot of reasons). I'm not into that kind of self aggrandizement and I don't care.

All I guess I'm saying is that Anthony Grant's success has a lot more to do with Jeff Capel than people admit. Sure, 94 feet both ways was exciting, and beating Duke monumental, but none of that happens without three seasons of success, a charged fanbase, and players like Eric Maynor.

Every advantage given Capel was exponentially enhanced for Grant. So too for Shaka.

Capel deserves that standing ovation.

I agree with mlitos, Grant rode the coattails of Maynor and Capel, I thought Grant was an awful tactician who was outcoached by Coen, Ben Howland, and others.

To me, Bama will be the acid test for coach Greed, we'll see just how good a coach he is in the SEC and especially against UK.

No question Capel was /is a class act...there is no Grant success without Capel. Grant had a great bunch of kids to work with for the season culminating in the Duke win...Capel was the right man at the right time and VCU had the vision and the balls to make that choice. Based on his resume he would not have got another head job anywhere in the country and he got it at a place where winning is very possible. I would hope that we find a way to appropriately honor him when OU comes to town...maybe a nice video tribute before the game.

Sure seems to have left the program with a little more grace than his successor did
