Oops, he's still the man but please delete this thread.

Why delete this thread? This is a pretty big deal! Just change the title to reflect that NC State has agreed to play VCU.

I agree. Will Wade is the only former VCU coach who has scheduled games with us that weren't contractually obligated or part of a MTE (where the schools don't control how the bracket is set up). I think that says a lot.

Will Wade continues to prove me right. Best VCU coach of the modern era and apparently a stand up guy. I know one thing -- Shaka has never gone out of his way to give us a great H&H with Marquette
Well, not sure how this proves Wade was the best VCU coach of the modern era (sorry, there's nothing to objectively to back up that statement). But he definitely deserves props for doing this.

Kinda says two things to me: 1) he appreciates the role VCU played in getting the coaching opportunities he has received; 2) he's not afraid of challenging his team with quality out of conference competition.

Regarding being proven right, I'll also pat myself on the back (though I don't see why anybody expected differently), I knew he was going to get another opportunity to coach and if he did well he'd find his way back to a power conference gig. I had debates in the forum with folks claiming his coaching career was over and that nobody would ever hire him.

For better or worse, winning trumps morality in college hoops.

Todd Golden at Florida proves your point

He said as much in a presser after a game against Louisiana-Lafayette in the NIT during his first season at LSU after ULL's coach claimed Wade was afraid to play good teams. He wants to schedule quality opponents whenever possible, and he specifically named VCU and our home-and-home series as an example of a quality non-conference opponent at the time.

Will Wade is a numbers guy, and he knows that playing a team like VCU enhances his chances at the end of the year to get, if needed, the at large bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This game is good for NC State and it is good for VCU.
💯 early in season, good test for his team, readiness for the knife fights in conference, hostile environment, no harm to net, and help to a quality program that helped launch him to the big time. Love it and hope it’s the shape of more to come.

Posters need to realize that NC State has only gone to the NCAA Tournament 3 times since 2015. Also, their 2024 Final Four run was an outlier just as VCU's was in 2011. NC State needs quality OOC games just as much as VCU in order to build their resume for an at-large bid. Since 2014, NC State has been a double digit seed in the NCAA Tournament 3 out of their 5 trips to the dance. On those other two trips, they were an 8 seed and 9 seed. The days of Jim Valvano are long gone. Valvano last coached at NC State 35 years ago.

Regarding the game in Raleigh next year, this is a great opportunity for VCU fans to pack an ACC arena and root on the Rams to a win. It's a 19,500 seat arena and NC State only averaged a little over 13,000 tickets sold per game last year. And that is factoring in a sold out UNC game last year.

Wade now has a rep and track record for turning programs around pretty quickly. And in this era of portals, NC State's past is pretty irrelevant. Gone are the days when coaches need a full recruiting class to develop before they start winning. Pitino needed just two years at St. John's to go from an 18 win team to winning 31 games.

I'm just happy we get NC State at the Siegel Center in year two of the Wade era.

I agree but there are a few things that stick out to me
  • WW is a proven winning coach
  • WW knows how to schedule
  • NC State has been inside the top 75 Kenpom all but three of those years
  • As bad as last year was, that still would have been a Q2 game for VCU at their place
It's a direct flight from Tampa that I make often so I will definitely be there
