2. The home of basketball royalty.
For any small town, having a native son nominated for a national hall of fame is a big deal. So how do you explain Wilmington getting two prominent members of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame over the past decade. First, it was Meadowlark Lemon in 2003. The Crown Prince of Basketball and his goodwill touring, first and most famously with the Harlem Globetrotters, brought the sport to millions around the world. Using both skill and savvy, he became an ambassador in many ways. And then there was some guy named Jordan in 2009. Perhaps you've heard of him?
To claim either one of these amazing players would be great. To have both? Well, Wilmington has had a few great pairs over the years, but these two might be at the top.
