Another preseason diversion:

Who is on your wreak havoc on defense team? Here's mine:

Grayson
JRod
Nixon
Burgess
Sanders

With Grayson's speed and quickness, Joey's quickness and nose for the ball, Ed's length and athleticism, Brad's steady knowledge of the game and length and Larry in the safety position, does anyone even get the ball up the court?

What we are really missing this year is that 6-7 long guy to man the point on the press. Nixon will have to fill that role this year and of course next year we will have Reco.

I don't see how any defensive team can happen without mentioning TJ, especially after his performances towards the end of last season.

Joey
Ed
Brad
TJ
Larry

This is my lineup as well, Ed and TJ our our grittiest, most tenacious defenders, and Joey came up with quite a few steals himself. Times like these make me miss Shuler though, he was an awesome baseline defender in games that came down to the wire.

In addition to Shuler, I also miss Mike Nice. He was great to stick on the inbounder, at the front of a press and he could even help carry the ball up court when teams tried to press us.

My Havoc-Wreaking Line-Up is the same starting Line-Up I have:

1- J-Rod
2- Gavin
3- Burgess
4- Skeen / Saintil
5- The Land-Lord

Here is my reasoning: First, I know 3 of them are excellent, proven defenders, and I am guessing that the other 2 will play hard D here at VCU, and for this staff. That is... if they want to actually "play." Plus- they have size, and Skeen is reportedly very athletic. Gavin should be capable too. Second: Give me a combination of killer-O, and Killer-D, and I'll beat you every time..... as opposed to the great defensive team, with little offense.

One of the smartest things I ever heard Anthony Grant say..... Give me a great offensive team any day of the week, and I will beat you. You can coach MOST (obviously... not all... but most) guys to play real solid D. And if that's what the staff teaches and demands.... then that is what you will get. Solid D. And perhaps amazing D if you have the athletes.

But if you don't have guys that can score.... you are screwed. Period. You won't win the big games. You can not teach scoring (for the most part). You may "refine" a guy. But it's either there.. or it isn't. Take a guy like Freddie Brown. Sure- He wasn't known as a big-time scorer, and he came on like gang-busters for JD. But it was in there. If you want an ugly game, with a negative outcome, then get a bunch of guys on the court, at the same time, that are stud defenders, but have no offensive ability. You will lose. And you'll lose ugly.

Go back and look at the 1996 UNCW team that lost to VCU in the CAA Championship. Ugly. Loss. Done.

Then go back and look at the recent VCU NCAA Teams- Especially 04' and 07.' Excellent defensively. And great offensively. Winners.

Good topic for discussion. My wreak havoc lineup, or as I like to call it our 2nd half shut down d lineup consists of:

Sanders/Center (Seven foot, seven inch wingspan)
K.P./Power Forward (Who can forget the game last year where K.P. put that guy in the headlock)
T.J/Small Forward (T.J. has always been more of a defensive guy than offensive)
Burgess/Shooting Guard (Brad is just fundamentally sound in all aspects of his game)
Rodriguez/Point Guard (Joey is known for being a pesky on ball defender)

Probably been posted but

Joey(Theus depending on his athleticism since he is longer)
Ed
TJ
Saintil
Larry
