VCU (5-4) opened the game with a 6-0 run to take a quick lead over the visiting Dolphins of Jacksonville University.
Jacksonville rallied though and rattled off a 14-1 run of their own to take their first lead of the game.
The Rams sandwiched another run, this time 8-0, to get the first half knotted up at 24-points each.
Both teams traded baskets until the buzzer locked in a 32-32 tie at the half.
With 4:32 left to play, Jacksonville connected on a free throw to take their largest lead of the night at 16-points.
VCU struggled to connect from the free throw line where they shot 66% making 19 of 29 attempts. The Dolphins connected on 18 of 20 free throws for 90% on the game.
Over the next two minutes, Brandon Johns connected on 8-8 free throws as part of a 10-0 VCU run.
Johns led the Rams with 20-points on the night to go with his 5 rebounds. He was 9-12 overall from the free throw line.
Jayden Nunn grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds for the Rams to go with his 14-points on the night.
The Rams were also out-rebounded 38-30 on the night as well.
VCU was able to get as close as 6-points with 2:37 left on the clock, but in the end the Dolphins lead was too much to overcome.
With only 13 turnovers, the Dolphins protected the ball better than any other team this season.
Tobi Lawal set a new career-high with 10-points on his first career start. He also grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 3 shots on the night.
This is the first in a stretch of six home games for the Rams.
