Welcome Roosevelt Wheeler šŸŒ¹

If I could choose, I'd go a Grad Shooter, and a Freshman Shooter, then a tower.
If Efton, the two USU guys, the French guy and the German guy all roll into town not sure we have room though that does cover the tower and multiple shooters.

The combination of those guys you mentioned fill are the criteria. Big = E Reid, the USU and the German guy= shooters, and the French guy = seems to be the most athletic baller of the guys being recruited which is a plus.

I am really beside myself with all this unbelievably good news when I was convinced VCU was doomed to mediocrity for the foreseeable future.
If this all comes together its the best team we EVER put on the floor. Add a coaching upgrade and I just can't wait.

Celtic, unlike some I try to read your posst critically and try to discern your point. I think sometimes you are a bit harsh. But I also think he hit the nail on the head often.

Why did you think we would be mediocre?

I dont see myself and being blinded by the Black and Gold (Yeah Yellow I know) but I really didnt think nor have I dont ever think we will fall into mediocrity again. We did that with Polio, Sonny, and Mack you guys (those who harsh) and the rest of the fans arent going to let that happened.

In fact, I dont think the University will let that happen. Basketball is too important to the brand.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I have to admit I can be harsh. All I can say is I calls um like I sees um.

On to your question: it starts with this past season, we won the A10 but it was a very weak A10 with two of the three marquis programs collapsing at the end (Dayton StLouis). We lose our most pivotal player (Johns) and significant contributor Shriver for sure and I was pretty convinced this would lead Baldwin to bolt to the P6. Obviously just a hunch but its my hunch and thats going to figure into my thinking. So all the sudden our team becomes even more ordinary. Dayton was looking shaky to me (that hunch seems to be more than just possible with talk of Grant retiring) all contributing to the further decline of the A10 meaning recruiting only gets harder. Throw my longstanding distaste for Rhoades and it all boils down to mediocre.

Now we still have the general conference issues BUT Mr Odom comes from the #6 conference (per Torvic) and was able to be a thorn in the side of SDSU so just maybe kids will see some growth and start looking at us ESPECIALLY if he can break through on scheduling (yeah I know its impossible and we tried and all but what if it's not ?)

Hopefully this answers your question and thanks for asking.

I understand. I disagree, but I understand.

Conference strength is cyclical (6-7 years ago the MWC was among the derided lot of "one bid leagues" while multiple teams from the A10 went dancing every year), but also conferences aren't evaluated as blocs. Gonzaga and U San Diego are not equivalent. Houston and East Carolina are not equivalent.

If we get a disappointing seed in the dance, it's not because Dayton or SLU were weaker than expected (don't forget both were receiving AP poll votes in the preseason, and Dayton started the season ranked). If we miss out on recruits, it's not because La Salle keeps soiling their proverbial trousers. Ultimately we are responsible for how our program is perceived.

This is why I don't subscribe to the school of thought that the A10 is "holding us back".

With regards to scheduling, the fact that we'll be playing a more conventional style of offense and defense might help us get some of those games. I suspect part of our scheduling difficulties during the HAVOC years was that P6 coaches didn't want to put time and effort into preparing for a style of play that their team wouldn't see for the rest of the season.

And the more conventional style of play may also help us with recruiting. Some players just don't want to deal with the hassle of playing the press for 40 minutes a game, every game, for multiple seasons.

This is an excellent take. Coach Rhoades said in the past that they specifically scheduled certain teams because they played similar styles to some of our A10 brethren.

No question conferences go up and down, ACC was #7 per Torvik. Thats unthinkable a few years back.

A10 is getting some better coaches in (can you say Fordham boys and girls ?) so we will see how that plays out. I think we staked out flag as flagship hiring Odom. Style has been the popular excuse for 12 years at least and maybe its true but I'm curious to see if a better last name at head coach makes a difference. I'm betting it does.

All in all the tea leaves are looking better and better. Makes this old fart pretty happy

We also got some good players because they wanted to play 96 feet offense and defense and not walk the ball up court half court only. It also took more players to play that way and there was often PT for up to 10 guys rather than 6 to 8. I think it will even out.
