Recruiting 2019 3* Maceo Austin: closed

Yet another wing, but one with pretty good skills. There might be some better options, but I wouldn't mind it at all if he decided to pick us.

From the how recruiting works world. of his list of 4, there is probably only on school he could call today and say I want to commit. His ability to commit to the other 3 (maybe 2) is based on other recruits actions. For what its worth, the situation is not unique. Once you get outside the top few, this is the case for all recruits

Can you explain how that works? I commit to an offer from a school for 2019; are you saying that they can put me on hold or rescind the offer because they snagged someone who they liked more? What does it mean, “His ability to commit to the other 3 (maybe 2) is based on other recruits actions”.

Well our top four wings will be Seniors his freshman year so we could probably use a wing in this class actually. As long as we get a good big man prospect I will be happy.

High Level, and here are a couple of things to remember.

1. Recruiting is not 1st come first accept. VCU has 30 plus offers for 2 spots and who is playing here is not based on the first two to say I'll sign up

2. Not all offers are committable

Many offers are contingent. If player A(a 4 star PG), player B( a 3star pg) and player C( a three star pg) all hold offers from State U. and State U only has one scholarship then only one person maybe 2 in certain cases will have a non contingent committable offer. Player in this case if he is the player with the non contingent offer can commit at any time. Player C may have an offer with contingencies. In order words, The school has advised that we are recruiting another player and waiting on a decision from that player. If that player commits we will not have an available scholarship. If that player does not commit, we will have an open scholarship

So I look at the “VCU offer list” and there is no distinction between non contingent or contingent. Does a student know what category he/she is offered? When a student commits are they told where they fall or do they know where they fall?

They know the terms of the offer. There is a lot of communication between the program and the kid throughout the process

So I don't speak for VCU or any school but generally as part of the conversation kids know where they fall. there are a number of reasons a kid may get an offer. For example, one of the things you hear people reference a lot on here and in other places is what does the offer sheet look like? Coach John at Any AAU may have a kid that he is trying to get a scholarship. He has a relationship with Coach Sam at lets say Duke. Duke has no intention on signing Coach Jon player but they may help get the ball rolling by "offering" him. Now a Coach at say Boston College sees this and say hey, if Duke is interested, maybe we should take a look. They end up liking what they see and offer the kid a committable offer, meaning one that the kid can say hey I want to commit right now. That's just one scenario and there are many others in recruiting.

Step away from thinking about VCU and just think in general terms. Do you think four, five or however many schools are all sitting around waiting for a 17 or 18 year old to make a decision with no options in hand? I mean here is another example, I travel to a lot of basketball games in a lot of states. Often, I will reserve the first room on booking. com that meets my criteria. Now, I often will book a 2nd room because I have been burned on a room not being as advertised and I want to have a fall back plan. Also, leading up to the trip, I am still checking to see if something better is available. The same thing happens in recruiting.

Look at this real life example. Bacot has VCU on his final list. Should VCU put all there eggs in one basket and not recruit another similar player? What if Bacot doesn't choose VCU then what? Does that make sense?
 
More than that, suppose we had 2 spots available -- PG and C -- and two offers to PG candidates and two to C candidates. Suppose the 2 PG candidates are first in line to commit; would we simply go without a C? There are dominoes falling all over the country. We have an offer to X, and he is our #1 priority. He also has an offer from Duke but he is Duke's number 6 or 7 priority. If he wants to commit to VCU now, we'd snap him up. If he wanted to commit to Duke, K would tell to hold on and let's see what happens with #1-5.
