STATEMENT FROM ST. BONAVENTURE:
From Director of Athletics Joe Manhertz:
We understand that ESPN posted a graphic regarding the selection of the NIT Tournament field on air Tuesday night.
Reaching the NCAA Tournament is the goal for St. Bonaventure basketball each year. We unfortunately came up short of that goal. Considering the logistics of what would have been an NIT road game, we made the proactive decision Sunday afternoon to inform the NIT selection committee of our concerns regarding roster uncertainty given injury and the transfer portal that would have left us at a competitive disadvantage. Together, athletics department administration and the coaching staff made the decision in the best interest of our student-athletes.
No invitation was extended prior to our conversation with the NIT committee. We respect the NIT and not only its history overall, but what the tournament has meant to our program. We look forward to future postseason competition.

That's...weird.

So the program made the decision and didn't bother to take the players' wishes into account. The Bonnies don't exactly have any key injuries.

Not to mention they weren't invited to begin with...

That's really weird.

SBU not telling the players they opted out is pretty bad.

Everyone found out when that graphic got shown. The explanation holds no water as they have only one key injury and he was still playing. Schmidt and their AD did the team and the school a huge disservice.

I would not be surprised if Schmidt left. Their fans were not too happy with his overall record as it was but now they are heated over this.

Makes me wonder a little if thats the real reason he declined it, because he's on his way out.... either by his own choice or the ADs.

These teams in NIT pay their own way in the NIT right? Could this be financial in nature?

The Payout Structure

The NIT does not have a set payout structure for teams that participate in the tournament. Instead, the NCAA divides the total revenue from the tournament among all the teams that participate. This is usually done through a combination of performance bonuses and travel reimbursements. The performance bonuses are typically based on the number of wins a team accumulates during the tournament. The travel reimbursements are based on the distance a team has to travel in order to participate in the tournament.

Performance Bonuses

Performance bonuses are the most common form of payment that teams receive for participating in the NIT. Each team that qualifies for the tournament is given a set amount of money for each game they play. This amount is usually around $25,000 per game. This money is then divided among the players and coaches on the team. So if a team wins two games in the tournament, they will receive $50,000 in total.

Travel Reimbursements

In addition to performance bonuses, teams that make it to the NIT are also eligible for travel reimbursements. The amount of money that teams receive for travel depends on the distance they have to travel to play in the tournament. For example, teams that travel more than 500 miles receive $30,000 in reimbursements, while teams that travel less than 500 miles receive $15,000 in reimbursements.

So basically no. It's pretty crazy considering that even though the NIT doesn't give out that much money, the money it does give out is a major boon for small schools like St. Bonaventure, which has never declined an NIT bid and in fact made it to the semifinals of the NIT in 2022. Their endowment is only about $92 million (VCU's is $2.7 billion).

I don't wish to allege anything online, but it smells like a money thing.
