Bones Hyland - NBA Thread

Bones's former coach is looking a little confused currently

Has Bones' initial two year contract expired now? I don't follow the NBA in the least, but I hadn't heard anything about him being re-upped.

I think the original contract was two years guaranteed, two more one-year club options. Spotrac.com shows the option for next year was exercised by Denver before he was traded.

Bones signed a rookie contract that guaranteed him $10.7 million over 4 years
NBA draft choices in round one are paid according to a scale based upon where they were picked in round 1 - the team can pay the draftee anywhere from 80% to 120% of the scale - Denver paid Bones at 120%

As Uluating Daddy said Denver exercised year 3 (team option) during the season - year 3 scale $2.3 million
Whomever has Bones on their roster next season has a deadline to exercise the Year 4 option (10-31-23) year 4 scale $4.16 million

the team he is on in year 4 can tender a qualifying offer to Bones for $6.14 million to pay Bones for year 5 or Bones can reject and be a full free agent ( I believe) and able to sign with anyone

NBA salaries and caps they have and exceptions make all of this a real jigsaw puzzle - most if not all teams have a person assigned to Cap Management and strategies around it

I hope this helps and I think it is accurate

Bones should still be at Denver giving it his all to help a team win a championship. Feel like he sabotaged what really was still a good opportunity, by not recognizing his role. Could have dealt with his future with the organization in the offseason.

I'd like for him to have stayed in Denver too, but the trade wasn't all on him.

We’ll it sure seemed that way when Denver couldn’t get squat in return for him.

While his leaving the bench during a game was likely a tipping point, I don’t think Denver trades him without there being other issues from their perspective.

Denver didn't get much of a return because Bones made it known before the deadline he was open to a trade. At that point it was clear they were shopping him so not too surprising he wasn't especially engaged, and if they've made it clear they're moving on, I don't see why it should be incumbent on him not to do the same. The whole situation was terribly mismanaged by their front office - a well run organization doesn't give up on a first rounder that easily. Bones probably could've handled being frustrated with his role better. Denver's new GM and coaching staff definitely could've done a better job cultivating a young talent.

Ultimately, though, it was pretty much a question of timelines. Bones needs to be somewhere he can earn a lot of time to develop, and Denver needs to maximize their championship window rather than develop a young guy at a position of strength.
