Recruiting Mike Williams: Closed

Both would help but being more relevant in post season would also help.
Yes, sweet 16 or beyond in March and a lot may change. From what some here have said, we are competitive in NIL, add in we are getting guys drafted by the NBA, we play an exciting style, great facilities and have an attractive family atmosphere.
Success in March is that one thing we need now.

I don't believe for a second that VCU is competitive when it comes to NIL and P5 schools. NIL is the driving force in college basketball these days and VCU just can't compete with P5 schools. We're talking the 1994 movie "Blue Chips" on steroids and the P5 schools have the financial "independent" resources to buy any player thinking about going to VCU. NIL and the transfer portal are killing college sports. And it's not a slow death.

Not a great showing for us on the trail so far this year

We were RIGHT there for these guys, but I think the problem really was these dudes just blew up a bit TOO much. Dilione is apparently the extreme truth and found himself at No.27 in ESPN's rankings. Demary and Williams both cracked 247's top-100 (Demary at No.58), but just ran into P5s who can really throw some weight around in the NIL era, plus they both have hot coaches at the moment. I think Rhoades has beyond exceeded expectations on the recruiting trail these last few years, now we just need these guys to produce on the court to show recruits VCU can be as sexy as the Shaka years to make VCU more of a destination. I think the A-10 really improving won't hurt either and if by some miracle VCU ends up in the Big East, things go to another level on the recruiting trail. Either way, just gotta win some darn NCAA tournament games and get this sellout streak back!

We had been recruiting pretty strong...landed Billups and Fermin who were right at the top 100 in most places and Lawal who might be the best of that group...were right there with a lot of really good ones this cycle, but sometimes it just doesn't pan out and you keep looking. Feels like getting a point guard to come in behind Ace and Nunn is going to be a major priority moving forward.

It might be that we need to wait a year so a guy comes in when Ace is gone. Playing time right away seems to be an issue with some. Ace is tough competition for a freshman point guard. So, maybe it's 2024.

The concern for the program is that Ace doesn't stay for all of his eligible years and then you're left scrambling looking for the most important position in the game. Having Nunn maybe gives some security but now his name is mentioned in NBA circles and you have to wonder if he uses up all his eligibility too. These are good issues b/c it means we have talented guys who are NBA prospects, etc, but it means you have to have replacements and a cycle where you go after multiple PG's and don't land one means you identified it as a need and didn't fill it. There's time and transfers but it was clear they wanted one and didn't get it...so far.
