Things I Can Share

Yeah, we were 8-1 in OOC play, so it is pretty obvious that he was trying to win every game. He also appears to be thinking long term and also worried about development of players and trying out different combos. No reason to fire him over that.

yes, I can get the party pack for free: Viagra, Advil, Prep H if things get out of control  and Chapstick, which is always handy.

I probably should have offered the party pack to Rick before he went to NO judging on what he was able to do down there from his posts.

On a serious note: VCU will beat Drexel tonight and AGfan and Rambunctious will make positive posts about Coach Smart and his ability to get the guys to play disciplined ball.

Alright smarta$$es

If the team plays better, disciplined basketball I will be the first to give Shaka props. In fact I will start a thread entitled "Shaka is a GOD and Rambunctious was wrong".

I have no personal vendetta against him and he seems like a decent guy, but he strikes me as a bit Zornish...great X and O, coordinator type guy that interviewed great and got the job, but not a disciplinarian or a leader of men...not yet anyway. I think our team has more talent and is just "out-athleting" and "out-talenting" teams to win at this point. There are times when having better players just isn't enough though. You need the advantage the coach can give you. I hope I am wrong, but the proof is in the pudding and so far the coaches that arguably run the most disciplined teams and have the most obstacles to basketball success (Coen and Shaver) have each beaten us in the CAA.

Bunctious I was just busting your chops a little.

I respect and understand your point. But there are different types of coaches out there who win with different styles. Look at Bobby Knight. He was a real disciplinarian and he won because his guys played the game according to Woodson's text book on how to play BBall. The majority of his players never liked him, but they did respect him.

There are also "players coaches" who get their point across through a mentoring style of teaching. I think Coach Smart is more of the latter. I don't see him as being an intimidator or real hard ass. Not every player will benefit from this style, but then not every player benefits from the Bobby Knight, and perhaps AG style. I mean how many players transferred out of here during AG's tenure?

You are right, Coen and Shaver would have never out coached Grant. At this point those guys should be out coaching Smart. They are far more experienced. He wasn't hired because of his experience, he was hired because of his upside. That is not something that you are going to see in the first dozen games of the season. It doesn't do much good to compare Smart to Grant because Grant didn't want to coach here any more, but Grant was a 10 year assistant at a SEC school with a national championship. We knew more about what we were getting with him, but we also knew that he probably wouldn't stick around very long. I don't like being in a 2 game hole any more than the rest, but our overall record is very respectable for a first year coach. In my mind the biggest tests for Coach Smart will be the return games with W&M and Northeastern.

Anthony Grant is an excellent coach- there can be little, or no doubt about that, at this point. But IMO, Shaver and Cohen can both coach with Grant all day long. They have different types of teams, and like someone else said... they have different types of obstacles in their way. Grant was good. But he has also had a stable of college basketball studs in the house- and one young man named.... oh what is it? ... oh yeah-Eric Maynor.

Cohen and Shaver are fantastic. Coach Smart is going to wind up being a fine coach too- and he has shown us a lot already. But the mistakes from Monday night have got to go away. He flirted with disaster. And he got burned. BIG. Like I said... he's going to be a good one though. And I think he's going to win big at VCU.

I just don't get all the love thrust upon Shaver. Ok, he is doing pretty good this year.....that is ONE year and we are only 10 games into the season. Where has W&M been all the other years he has been coaching there?????? And yeah they made a move in the tournament one year....but they showed "average" when looking at their season. Again, I just don't get all the love.

Let me ask you this.....if he had the same w-l record at VCU after his 3 or 4 years, would all you be showing him with kisses and asking that we renew his contract? I just don't get it. And don't give me crap about "Oh but he is coaching W&M which must maintain academic superiority over all the other school in the CAA"

It's not VCU. It's William and Mary. And Shaver is FANTASTIC. Period. It takes anyone a couple years to start something positive. He had zero momentum when he landed there, and look at his body of work over the past 3 years. And look even harder at the quality and depth of players he's got now. Shaver is good. Real good.

And for the record, he's not just doing pretty good with them this year. He has got them rolling. Beating Wake- at Wake. Beating Maryland- at Maryland. Beating VCU at home- and mounting one of the smartest, and most cool-and calm come-backs I've seen in a while. Smart, team-oriented basketball. And heck- they barely lost to UCONN- up there in Connecticut. RPI of #3 in the Nation? Geez.... what more do you want from a guy coaching a bunch of white guys? I mean... they have some really nice players. But still.... They aren't getting Stanford types. At least- not across the board anyway. Anyway.... i could go on and on.... IMO... Shaver is something else.

1. A shorter rotation is coming very soon. Look for 8 players per game soon.
2. Skeen will be starting at the 4 soon.
3. Other players have been giving Larry poop about playing out of position.
4. Coach is still experimenting on purpose. He wants to win the conference tournament, and wants to learn the most he can about our players early. He was never in search of an at-large, at least not directly.

All I got right now. Things will be very different very soon, and we'll start giving teams fits because of it.

Guess we will have to wait until Saturday to see these changes

When did I say "today"?

I'm just reporting on what I hear.

I didn't say you said "today"

#4 clearly implied he was still tweaking

but I would like to see the changes soon

There is no quick fix for what we've got. It's like a freight train - - we've had 3+ months to get ready to play ball and you can't go voila, put the brakes on the train, change directions, and all of a sudden we are a good basketball team. it's ridiculous to think not playing 1 or 2 guys anymore is going to fix this. We have good players, but not a good team and not a real sound system at the moment. We might win some games that are close instead of losing them, but it should be apparent that we aren't going to roll the CAA.

Agreed. While it would be great to see us roll, looks like its gonna be another grind it out, wind it down to the last shot CAA season. Quite honestly its one of the things that keeps me coming back to CAA basketball. Great battles that more often than not are decided in the last two minutes. Hopefully we'll come out on the winning end of most of them.

W&M seems to know how to do it. Except they wait to the very last second.
