23-24 Opponent Tracking Thread

Imagine it will be a 7-9pm tip-off, unless they do a weird 6pm game like they occasionally do.

It’s probably a nationally televised game, which means the dreaded 9pm weeknight tip is definitely in play.
I’d rather it be 9 than 6.

6pm games have become almost impossible for me to make on weeknights because of work. I also don’t want to be out until midnight, but at least I can make the game if it’s at 9.

I hope we never have a weeknight game before 7 again.

We need to do whatever is necessary to significantly improve our OOC schedule. Our goal should be to always make the NCAA. We won’t make it every year, but it should be our goal. Our conference isn’t going to do much to help us with that goal, short of having an end-of-season tournament to secure an automatic birth. We simply must play P6 schools at their place with no guaranteed return as often as we can. I’m tired of the whining as to nobody will play us. We’re not a P6, nor have we achieved Gonzaga status. We can charter flights to any small town runway. I could care less how many home games we buy against patsies. I want games of significance and I want to make the NCAA. Year after year of excuses. Just go to good teams home courts, if that is required. I’d rather watch us lose to a good team then go to the Stu to see us beat a team of little consequence.

I hope the past is not a prelude to the future.

Utah state played a D2 school in each of Odom's years' there
at UMBC 16-17 (2 D3s), 17-18 (2 D3s and one D2), 18-19 (3 D3s,) 19-20 (2 D2s and 1 D3) 20-21 (none ; D3 had no official year that is championship, not sure if D2 took off too)

with Odom's D3 playing days at hampden-sydeny, he probably was trying to be nice to help those programs and pay them a little but would hate if he did it here at VCU

At UMBC, he might not have had a choice with the scheduling and they may have just needed an easy game or two.

At USU, the MWC was good enough to be able to handle a game like that.

Also, I’m pretty sure that D2 games don’t either help or hurt your NET. They aren’t counted. I’ve advocated before that from a NET perspective you’re probably better off playing a good D2 team than playing a really bad D1 team. And there probably isn’t much difference in the quality of the team you’d play.

OOC scheduling is, has been, and remains a program strength.

1. VCU leads the nation in non-P6 program at-large bids over the past decade or so.
2. The scheduling formula/template for VCU (to produce an at-large worthy resume on Selection Sunday) is established/proven.
3. Schedule all D-1 opponents (always). D-1 win volume and final Selection Sunday D-1 record matter (metrics, optics, etc).
4. This year’s 13-game OOC schedule (the heavy lifting portion - ESPN Invitational Tourney, Temple, Memphis) is essentially already in place. The current staff needs to simply (and wisely/strategically) fill in around the edges.
5. Presumably the “Director of Analytics” staff member understands all of this and will help the staff schedule accordingly. The VCU A-10 “success” template already exists.
6. OOC scheduling (13 games) is a balancing act. Rigor vs ease. Home vs away vs neutral. Game sequencing/spacing. Risk vs reward assessment. Speculation and prediction (opponent performance metrics-related). Financial/budget concerns. VCU hoop administration historically threads this needle quite nicely.

I've been told that scheduling games in Logan was difficult because it's not easy to get to.

Looking at map, that makes a lot of sense. I'm sure Richmond is a breath of fresh air compared to how remote Logan is.
